Trees are big, tall, and on the ground
They make me proud, happy to be around.
Some are tiny, some are short
but it doesn't matter what kind or sort;
I wish I was a tree so I could stand and give support.

Grade 5
'A Day in the Woods' was a ten-month project at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park Environmental Education Center, led by 2007-08 Writer in Residence, Jessica Jones. Each week Jones worked with thirty students in one-hour workshops, during which students heard, discussed, and wrote nature poetry. After taking notes outside, students shaped their observations of the landscape into short poems that they then read aloud for constructive criticism and group recognition.
