A Day in the Woods

'A Day in the Woods' was a ten-month project at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park Environmental Education Center, led by 2007-08 Writer in Residence, Jessica Jones. Each week Jones worked with thirty students in one-hour workshops, during which students heard, discussed, and wrote nature poetry. After taking notes outside, students shaped their observations of the landscape into short poems that they then read aloud for constructive criticism and group recognition. Reeds jut out into an expanse of ice,
blurring the division between land and lake,
Tall grasses transcending nature's cycles of life-
Immitations of immortality that journey
across that proliferation of lake expanse,
as if to smooth the edges of nature.
