Snails have swirly, spectacular shells,
And little antennaes that are quicky and squishy and soft,
Yet at the same time, snails are slower that the clouds
That move on warm sunny days.

Grade 6
'A Day in the Woods' was a ten-month project at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park Environmental Education Center, led by 2007-08 Writer in Residence, Jessica Jones. Each week Jones worked with thirty students in one-hour workshops, during which students heard, discussed, and wrote nature poetry. After taking notes outside, students shaped their observations of the landscape into short poems that they then read aloud for constructive criticism and group recognition.
