They've got very good polka dots
that you can look at,
and they've got good texture
to them...
So that if you lay a rock
on top of something else
for a long time
that something
will take on the texture
of the rock.

'A Day in the Woods' was a ten-month project at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park Environmental Education Center, led by 2007-08 Writer in Residence, Jessica Jones. Each week Jones worked with thirty students in one-hour workshops, during which students heard, discussed, and wrote nature poetry. After taking notes outside, students shaped their observations of the landscape into short poems that they then read aloud for constructive criticism and group recognition.
